The following grammar forms are used to say that one thing depends on something else:

It depends on a noun

Noun + (y) + a/e    bağlı

This is the simplest of the dependence grammar forms. It simply means “it depends on X,” where X is a noun.

    Examples
    Ayşe‘ye bağlı.
    It depends on Ayşe.

Hava sonu parka gitmek istiyorum, ama havaya bağlı.
I want to go to the park this weekend, but it depends on the weather.

It depends on a verb

Verb + ma/me + (possessive ending) + (n) + a/e    bağlı

This grammar form is the most common way to say that something depends on a verb. In this form, the dependence is on something that either is currently happening or will happen. The possessive ending specifies the person or thing doing the action.

    Examples
    Hava güzel olmasına bağlı.
It depends on if the weather is good.

Benim mutluluğum bebeğimin iyi uyumasına bağlı.
My happiness depends on if my baby sleeps well.

Benim gelmem babamın izin vermesine bağlı.
My coming depends on if my dad gives permission.

Benim başarı olmam iyi derecede Türkçe öğrenmeme bağlı.
My being successful depends on me learning Turkish well.

Less common forms

Verb + ıp/ip/up/üp    (same verb) + ma/me + ma/me + (possessive ending) + (n) + a/e    bağlı

This form has approximately the same meaning as the more common form above, just with emphasis on the fact that something is depending on whether or not a condition is true.

    Examples
Şu cep telefonu alacak mısın? ‑ Uygun fiyatı olup olmamasına bağlı.
Are you going to buy that smartphone? ‑ It depends on whether or not it’s a good price.

(Question word) verb + dığı + (possessive ending) + (n) + a    bağlı

This form is used when the verb that is being depended on is modified by a question word such as who, how much, or when. Note that this form is commonly used even when the verb that is being depended on is in the future. In these cases, ‑acağına bağlı can also be used, but it is less common (see section below)

    Examples
Sence iyi not alacak mıyım? ‑ Ne kadar çalıştığına bağlı.
Do you think I will get a good grade? ‑ It depends on how well you studied.

Sen de gelecek misin? ‑ Kimin seninle geldiği + ne bağlı.
Are you going to come too? ‑ It depends on who comes with you.

(Question word) verb + (y) + acağı/eceği + (possessive ending) + (n) + a/e    bağlı

This form has the same meaning as the above ‑dığına bağlı grammar form, with the exception that it is explicitly talking about a future action.

    Examples
Çay içmek isterim, ama eşimin kaçta geleceğine bağlı.
I want to drink tea, but it depends on when my husband is coming home.

Sen de gelecek misin? ‑ Kimin seninle geleceğine bağlı.
Are you going to come too? ‑ It depends on who comes with you.
(Note: this is the “proper” way to say it, but the common way of saying it is given in the section above.)

Lokantaya gidelim mi? ‑ Ne yiyeceğimize bağlı.
Should we go to a restaurant? ‑ Depends on what we’re going to eat.
